Bolafjall
Bolafjall mountain is one the most popular places to visit in Bolungarvík. During summer it’s easy to drive up to the top and enjoy breathtaking views over Jökulfirðir (e. Glacial Fjords), Hornstrandir and the interesting flat tops of the mountains around. A famous myth says that on a clear day you can even see all the way to Greenland. Please go ahead and check! In 2022, an observation deck was opened for an even better experience. The deck is situated on the edge of the mountain, 638 meters above sea level.

Skálavík
Skálavík is the next creek to Bolungarvík and can be reached by the same gravel road that leads up to Bolafjall. It really is a hidden paradise in the Westfjords with a black sand beach and a river that leads to the sea. Jump from the grassy hill into the deep part of the water! It’s a perfect place for a picnic during a sunny day or a romantic sunset in the evening.

Hesteyri
Hesteyri is a small abandoned village located in Hornstrandir, a nature reserve. It’s a unique place which you can only enter by foot or a boat and has neither electricity or cell service. Now the descendants of the people who lived there own summerhouses, a small guesthouse and a cafe in the area. Hesteyri offers you serene nature, mossy valleys and varied wildlife like birds, seals and foxes. Enjoy your time there without the interruptions of the modern life.

Ósvör “Maritime Museum” is a restored fishing hut which is reminiscent of the old days of rowboat fishing. A trip to Ósvör is like going back in time and experience the equipment and boats villagers used in the old days. The museum contais a double 19th century fishing base, salt hut, fish drying area and drying hut. Try to go there when the curator welcomes you in a traditional fisherman outfit to maximise the experience.

Swimming pool
One of the best swimming pools in Iceland is located in Bolungarvík. The locals call it “The Temple of Water and Wellness” and many of them go there every day, all year round to unwind. It has everything you need; an indoor swimming pool, sauna, three hot tubs outside along with a small slide for the kids. If you want to stay in shape during your vacation you can also find a small gym located in the same house.
